I'm department chair of the MIT Laboratory of Anthropological Intelligence, an interdisciplinary venture between the departments of Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL) and Anthropology. I'm currently teaching 21A.533 (cross-listed as 6.855).

I'm working with an excellent group of graduate students from both departments on ways to understand the complicated interaction (and fine line) between computers and humankind. In particular, my group focuses on the influence of computer technology in the burgeoning field of biolinguistic anthropology. Our current projects include a new principled approach to the automated speech recognition of indigenous peoples in third world countries, and a long-term, multi-decade plan to systematically implant every parking meter in southern Uganda with BlueTooth streaming technology. I also am proud to consider myself a scholar in the history of this great university and its surrounding area.
